Dedicate a Star for a Special Occasion

Life is full of special occasions that call for a gift to mark the event.  Whether that event is a birthday, anniversary, baby shower, graduation, honor, or just a "thank you", many gifts will help make the occasion special and memorable.  Personalized gifts are best for occasions like these, and one unique idea for a personalized gift is to register a star in someone's name.

One thing to beware, however, is star naming sites that suggest they are affiliated with NASA or the IAU or some other governmental body.  Dedicating a star is meaningful and very much apprecaited by many people as a fun and personalized way of showing affection, and some star naming companies provide excellent value in their gift sets, but star naming is not an offical government designation.

As the article states, most sites charge between $40-60, but I paid $19.99 and you can get a Groupon closer to Christmas. If you do some searching online, there are sites whrer you can do it for free!

Save Your Money ... Unless you've already accepted one of these Cons. And if you have, HaHaHa .... Some people are So Gullible. These So Called Star Naming Organisations are FAKES. You CANNOT name a Star. The Star YOU may name on a particular Site, will most likely have a Different Name on another site.

Starman, I don't get all the anger you're holding on this issue. At least on the sites that make clear the actual internationally accepted star name isn't being changed, the purchaser is well aware of this, and isn't being "conned" and doesn't consider himself conned, or gullible.

Well, whoever wrote this piece should write more, it is so refreshing to find someone who says it as it is, not for gain or hype but simply using their knowledge to set folk out there right and what a great piece too, frank and honest without being negative to the idea either.
Please write more and when you do let me know I would but a paper you wrote in, something I never do otherwise due to the solely negative rubbish that fills them.
Hoorah to you..... keep up the good work

I think most people know that it's not scientifically refereed to. As long as the person receiving it and sending it are happy then it's a harmless gift. I see companies offering to launch the name into space, publish a book every year and star-name-registry.com even have a live registry and a link to view the star on google sky. Maybe I get to excited by the idea but as long as it's not 100's of pounds then i don't see the issue with it.

Agreed, Sanjay. That was the point of the article I wrote. It's not right when companies lie and deceive about what they're selling, and there are star naming sites that do that. But when they explain exactly what they are selling, then it's people's own business if they want to buy these. What I think is that a lot of people are looking for a fun way to say "I love you" to someone, and they may be tired of the usual ways: greeting card, box of chocolates, flowers, or whatever. The essence of the gift is the message they write. The rest is packaging - the rest is the excuse for writing. Some people have a hard time expressing their feelings for another person, and this kind of gift gives them as easier way to say what they want to say. I bet a lot of the recipients don't care nearly as much about the star as they care about the message they received.

It's great to know that a star can be dedicated to someone. I think this would be an awesome gift to give and receive. Just looking up at the night sky and seeing that a certain star is named after you would just be very meaningful and sweet. I also like how you insisted on us making sure that it is a legit company we're making deals with. I'll keep that in mind.

After my dad passed away I had a hard time getting through it. My friend named a star after my dad through Starregistry.com. It helped! Now I go outside and look at the constellation that the star is located in and it makes me feel better knowing his star is shining down on me. It is a lovely, harmless gift and a great remembrance of your loved one.

Star naming isn't official - even though some star naming sites say it is.
